Next Katagum emir likely to be one of late emir’s children


Following the death of Emir of Katagum, Alhaji Kabir Umar, it is being speculated that the next emir will emerge from among his children, most notably his eldest son, Alhaji Baba Umar Farouq.

Emir Kabir Umar died Saturday at 89.

Baba Umar Farouk, the first male of the 49 children left behind by the late emir is being speculated to be for now the one most likely to become the next emir.

Farouq, a former Federal Permanent Secretary, ‎is currently the district head of Shira.

Most of the people who became emirs of Katagum, including his late father, were the immediate ‎past district heads of Shira.

Sources close to authorities in Azare disclosed to our reporter on condition of anonymity that most of the contenders, especially his brothers, had conceded aspiration for the throne to him.

“I am telling you that he might be the one to become the next emir,” one of the sources said.

A traditional title holder had at an interaction with journalists before the funeral prayer of the late emir said they would not have problem in choosing the next emir as there was only one united ruling house in Katagum Emirate.
