Pregnant woman, five others die in Ogun crash

A pregnant woman and five others lost their lives, while two others were injured in an auto crash along Ajebo Road, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday, when a granite-laden Volvo truck and a Nissan Bluebird collided.

A traffic report obtained by our correspondent indicated that the accident occurred at the Mechanics Village, Ajebo Road, Abeokuta, at about 9pm.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the Nissan Bluebird had number plate, FD 638 EKY, while the Volvo truck bore KJA 731 XP as its number plate.

He said the casualties were all passengers in the Nissan, including the driver.

Akinbiyi explained that although the car was private, it was being used for commercial purposes when the accident occurred.

On the cause of the accident, Akinbiyi noted that the truck driver drove recklessly and lost control, forcing the vehicle to veer into the opposite lane.

The truck was said to have then collided with the oncoming Nissan Bluebird.

He said, “The Volvo truck was coming into Abeokuta, while the Nissan car was travelling outside the capital city to Mile 6.

“The truck driver caused the accident by driving recklessly. He lost control of the truck as it crossed to the opposite lane, colliding with the Nissan Bluebird, which was on its own lane.

“Six people died in the car, including the driver and a pregnant woman. The casualties were three males and three females. There were two children among them.”

He, however, said the driver of the truck fled the scene of the accident.

Akinbiyi added that the injured passengers were receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, while the deceased had been deposited in the Ijaiye General Hospital mortuary, also in the capital city.
